Interstices

This series is an incursion into singular places, once vibrant, but which have been plunged into a period of latency – thus losing their original uses: from the headquarters of a major company designed by Eero Saarinen, a modernist factory in the Netherlands, a glass house in Canada to a sake brewery in Japan. The research was also aiming at comparing approaches in buildings adaptive reuse across continents and learning about the relationships citizens have with these spaces. The notion of interstice (interstitial spaces) is thought here as multiple situations which in a given time offer new possibilities, that of imagining, of reconstructing; somewhere between eras, regimes or the demolitions schedule…
Through photography, 3d modeling and prints, the artists deconstruct the architecture of four sites; the Bell Labs complex in New Jersey, the Enka factory in the Netherlands, a sake brewery in Sonobe, Japan, and the former now abandoned zoo in Charlesbourg, Quebec. Different architectural typologies are dissected here and rendered in various ways. Some images evoke a disappearance through the effects of dispersion or, on the contrary, magnify architectural objects as symbols of civilization: chimneys, large windows, workplaces, etc.

Summary of the four places :

Bell Labs, industrial research complex, Holmdel, New Jersey, USA. Built circa 1959 (architect Eero Saarinen), converted in 2014.

Enka, former industrial complex for the production of synthetic fibers now converted into a residential park in Ede, Netherlands, near Amsterdam. Construction circa 1920.

Former sake brewery that has lost its original use, Sonobe, Nantan-shi, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. Construction circa 1850.

Disused Indo-Australian greenhouse (zoo), Charlesbourg, Quebec, Canada. circa 1990.
